We are delighted to welcome Professor Hieyoon Kim as the new Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies at Brown University. A distinguished scholar of dissident culture and media focusing on Korea, Professor Kim has made significant contributions to understanding the intersection of media and politics.
Her first book, Celluloid Democracy: Cinema and Politics in Cold War South Korea, will be published in Fall 2023 by UC Press. The book examines how Korean filmmakers, distributors, and exhibitors reshaped cinema during the political upheavals from 1945 to 1987.
Professor Kim's articles have appeared in leading journals such as the Journal of Asian Studies, Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, Feminist Media Histories, and Critical Times: Interventions in Global Critical Theory.
Before joining Brown, she taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We are excited to have her join our community and look forward to her contributions.
